The Texas State Railroad runs between Palestine and Rusk in the piney woods of east Texas. In season, trains depart each day from both Rusk and Palestine and meet midway giving the passengers a unique opportunity to pass another steam train. The line was originally built by the Texas Prison System to haul iron ore and wood to smelting furnaces at Rusk. Trains pass by or through Meeshaw, Maydelle, Talles Creek, the Neches River, and the Jarvis Wye. The 25 mile ride takes about 1 1/2 hours and crosses 24 trestles.
Currently, the engine roster includes 4 steam engines and 4 antique diesel engines.
This is a great ride and I highly recommend it. In Texas call 1-800-442-8951, outside Texas call 1-903-683-2561 for reservations.
