The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs from Durango to Silverton in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado. It mostly follows the Animas River and passes through Hermosa, Needleton, Rockwood, Trimble, Elk Park, Tefft, and Tacoma. The coal fired steam engines pull you along the high line over Baker's Bridge and past numerous old mines and mine buildings. Most of the motive power was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the early 1900's and originally served the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

It's a wonderful ride and I highly recommend it. Call 970-247-273 or 888-TRAIN-07 for reservations.

As long as you're in the area, be sure and make the drive from Silverton to Ouray over the Million Dollar Highway. It's a gorgeous drive. There are also many Jeep Trails in the area if you want to get off the beaten path.
