The Austin & Texas Central Railroad runs from Cedar Park (northwest of Austin) to Burnet, Texas, passing through Leander, Liberty Hill, Bertram, and Summit. The motive power is a restored Mikado, all 143 tons of her, built by the American Locomotive Co. in 1916. She is former Southern Pacific No. 786. She sat on display in an Austin park for many years before being restored by the Austin Steam Train Association. She will pull you on an unforgettable 66 mile round trip in restored heavyweight coaches that were built for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1920's. It's a wonderful ride and I highly recommend it. Call (512) 477-8468 for reservations.
Please note that I am in no way connected to the Austin & Texas Central Railroad, the Austin Steam Train Association, or anything else having to do with this railroad. I just think it's a lot of fun.
